SEOUL, Mar. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean-made law firm LKB&Partners has inked a legal advisory contract with Firstman Studio Co., Ltd., which is also known as the producer of Netflix sensation “Squid Game”’s second season.
Firstman Studio is a production house co-founded by star director Hwang Dong-hyuk and producer Kim Ji-yeon, who both have credits for the mega-hit thriller series “Squid Game.” The firm is gearing up to drop diverse K-contents including the long-awaited second season of “Squid Game.”
Hwang, who attended the signing ceremony on Wednesday, said, “We may encounter various legal problems throughout the production, screening, and distribution of our next work. But, I am now relieved to know that we will have an access to highly professional legal advice by signing this contract.”
“I am very well aware that many screenwriters, actors, and directors got entangled in legal disputes by just skimming through their contract carelessly,” the director said. “With the Korean entertainment industry growing in size, I believe our legal advisory system should also be advanced.”
In a similar vein, the Directors Guild of Korea (DSK), to which Hwang belongs, also declared to endorse the revision of the copyright law during last month’s National Assembly. The revision was aiming to include an act that promises a portion of proceeds generated via video works to be allocated to creators including directors and screenwriters.
Lee Jong-hoon, LKB&Partners’ representative lawyer, said, “We will put our utmost effort in ensuring that Firstman Studio’s works may be able to be distributed across the globe without any legal problems,” adding, “We will also eagerly give out legal advice on any issues related to the rights of creators and producers, especially in regards to the legislative process on profit distribution.”
