SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) -- Director Park Chan-wook’s “Decision To Leave” is continuing to receive favorable reviews by foreign news media at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, on the 23rd (local time).

The film took an average score of 3.2, the highest score of the in-competition films of this year’s festival, and has been regarded as one of the leading candidates for Palme d'Or, according to the film news Screen Daily.

However, it is still premature to predict the win of Park’s new film, as "Tori and Lokita" by the Dardenne brothers and "Broker" by Hirokazu Kore-eda have yet to be unveiled and high scores from news media do not always lead to wins.

Screen Daily introduced the film by saying, “This seductive, serpentine neo-noir,” and praised it as “a visually glorious film, with slyly expressive use of colour and framing which is as precise as it is playful.”

“Park Chan-wook raises the bar on the 2022 Cannes competition programme and reasserts his position as a peerless visual stylist,” added the film news.

The Guardian, U.K media, gave the film five stars out of five in a review, saying it is "very Hitchcokian" in many ways.

The American entertainment magazine Variety said, “A love story wrapped in a mischievous murder mystery,” adding, “it’s almost magical.”

Variety continued to praise the film by saying, “After the world-conquering success of Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’ and the small-screen domination of ‘Squid Game,’ your new, sublimely accomplished Korean thriller obsession is here, and it is Park Chan-wook’s ‘Decision to Leave."

“Decision to Leave” depicts the story of a detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il), who investigates the murder case in the mountains, developing an interest in the dead man’s mysterious wife Seo Rae (Tang Wei). It is Park’s first film in six years since the movie “The Handmaiden” was released, and it is also Park’s fourth Cannes competition title.
