SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- The horror film "Salmokji," starring Kim Hye-yoon, is expected to maintain its lead at the weekend box office, industry data showed Friday.
According to the Korean Film Council, the film drew about 48,000 moviegoers on Thursday, accounting for 34.4 percent of total ticket sales to rank No. 1.
Directed by Lee Sang-min and released April 22, "Salmokji" follows employees of a road-view service who encounter mysterious events after entering a reservoir for street filming. Its cumulative audience has reached about 1.64 million.
In second place was "Jjanggu," a film written, directed and headlined by actor Jung Woo, which attracted about 20,000 viewers, or 13.4 percent of total sales, on its second day of release.
"Jjanggu" is a sequel to "Wish" (2009), released 17 years later, and tells the story of a young man in his 20s who moves from Busan to Seoul to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
Director Lee Myung-se’s documentary "Ran 12.3" ranked third with about 17,000 viewers, followed by the sci-fi blockbuster "Project Hail Mary" in fourth place with around 15,000.
As of 9 a.m., advance booking rates were topped by "The Devil Wears Prada 2," set to be released April 29, with 20.0 percent, as more than 71,000 viewers await the sequel nearly 20 years after the original.
