SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Yonhap) -- Director Ryoo Seung-wan’s hit film “Escape from Mogadishu” (Mogadishu) has been sold to 50 nations including North America, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Morocco, and Japan, according to its distribution company, Lotte Entertainment Thursday.

Although the release dates have not been confirmed due to the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases, the film is to land on Hong-Kong and Singapore in September, said Lotte Entertainment.

Earlier, “Mogadishu” has been praised in the U.S since its screening for the opening of New York Asian Film Festival on Aug. 6.

America’s entertainment news magazine, Variety, rated the film saying that it is “a terrific mix of action-thriller excitement and riveting drama based on the amazing true story, tightly constructed. Audiences are treated to half an hour of top-class car chases and shootouts, scenes reminiscent of post-apocalyptic ‘Mad Max.’“

“Suspenseful action-thriller with the final, nerve-rattling drive to potential salvation while not neglecting the human stories at their heart. Director Ryoo makes the most of the Moroccan locations and the film’s reported $20 million budget,” commented America’s newspapers, Huston Chronicle as well.

“Currently the film is running in 42 screens in the U.S, but is flooding with requests for more screenings,” said Lotte Entertainment.

“Escape from Mogadishu”, although released during the Tokyo Olympics and the 4th wave of the pandemic, astonished the critics with an unprecedented record of having attracted more audiences on the second week Monday than in its first week since release and on Sunday than on Saturday. The film stood atop as 2021 Korea’s best No.1 hit movie on its 7th day since release reaching a million watchers and it has now exceeded 1.8 audiences.
