SEOUL, Mar. 23 (Yonhap) -- On a bleak night with a blood-red full moon, Mona (played by Jeon Jong-seo) with supernatural powers escapes from a mental asylum.

Although she is gifted with the supernatural power that enables her to hypnotize and control anyone at will, Mona is yet unfamiliar with the outside world as she was put in a mental institute at the age of 10. Everything is new to this mysterious girl – she has her snack, beer, hamburger, strip show, television, music, dance, and a kiss. Mona, to whom everything is brand-new and inexperienced, seems like an innocent child.

The fantasy thriller movie “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” follows the story of the mysterious mental patient Mona escaping from a mental asylum, chasing after freedom. Mona grows little by little throughout her very first journey out of the asylum as she encounters people from various walks of life, including the struggling single mom Bonnie (Kate Hudson), her son Charlie (Evan Whitten), and DJ Fuzz (Ed Skrein).

Director Ana Lily Amirpour, who has been drawing international attention with her unique sense and imaginative power, took the helm of this fresh fantasy thriller by using psychedelic colors such as neon lights to capture dream-like vibes in her work.

The film also marks South Korean actress Jeon Jong-seo’s Hollywood debut film. By freely crossing over from an eerie witch to a naive child, the multi-faceted actress captivates the audience with her exceptional aura.

In the meantime, Kate Hudson, who won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her credit in “Almost Famous” (2000), has also made an enthralling transformation in her acting by starring as a single mother Bonnie, who raises her son all by herself as a strip dancer.

This unconventional PG-15 film, with a running time of 107 minutes, hit the local theaters on Wednesday.
