SEOUL, Oct. 23 (Yonhap) -- A ceremony in which a Joseon king inspected royal guards in preparation for emergencies will be reenacted at Gyeongbok Palace.
The Korea Heritage Service's Royal Palaces and Tombs Center and the Korea Heritage Agency said Friday that they will hold "Cheopjong," a reenactment of a Joseon-era royal guard inspection ceremony, at Heungnyemun Square at Gyeongbok Palace from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
Cheopjong refers to the act of repeatedly striking a bell. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), kings personally inspected royal guards and maintained military discipline in an effort to safeguard the foundations of the state.
When Cheopjong was performed, all military personnel on duty at the palace, as well as civil and military officials and soldiers of the Five Military Commands, the central military organization of the Joseon Dynasty, gathered to undergo an inspection before the king.
The inspection involved checking the soldiers' level of training and overall condition in the presence of the king.
The event will be presented in theatrical form based on records from the "Gyeongguk Daejeon," the Joseon Dynasty's basic code of law, depicting a royal procession, martial arts demonstrations and military formations.
Visitors will also be able to see the royal guards who protected the king, known as Geumgun, along with reproductions of costumes and weapons believed to have been worn and used during the early Joseon period.
A rehearsal will be held on Oct. 29 ahead of the event.
The Cheopjong ceremony will be held twice daily, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The royal guard changing ceremony will not be held while the Cheopjong event is underway.
