Live-action 'Moana' tops box office, Na Hong-jin's 'Hope' leads advance ticket sales

SEOUL, July 10 (Yonhap) -- Disney's live-action adaptation of "Moana" debuted at the top of the South Korean box office, while director Na Hong-jin's upcoming sci-fi action film "Hope" led advance ticket sales, industry data showed Friday.

 

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated box office system, "Moana" drew about 39,000 moviegoers Thursday, accounting for 30.0 percent of total ticket sales to rank first. The film also topped the box office on its opening day Tuesday with approximately 66,000 admissions.

Based on Disney's 2016 animated hit, the film follows Moana (Catherine Laga'aia), the daughter of the chief of Motunui, as she sets sail to find the legendary demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and save her cursed island.

 

The thriller "Eyes," starring Shin Min-a, ranked second with about 38,000 admissions and a 27.2 percent share of ticket sales.

 

Released on June 24, "Eyes" has attracted a cumulative 1.019 million viewers, surpassing the 1 million admissions mark.

 

Disney and Pixar's animated film "Toy Story 5" placed third with about 24,000 moviegoers and a 17.4 percent sales share, followed by director Yeon Sang-ho's zombie film "Colony," which drew about 7,000 viewers for a 5.3 percent share.

 

The comedy "Wild Thing," starring Kang Dong-won, ranked fifth with about 3,000 admissions and a 2.1 percent share. Its cumulative audience has reached about 1.32 million.

 

As of 9 a.m. Friday, "Hope," Na's sci-fi action film set to open July 15, topped the advance reservation chart with a 39.6 percent booking rate. More than 251,000 people had reserved tickets ahead of its release.

 

"Moana" ranked second in advance bookings with a 16.7 percent reservation rate, equivalent to more than 106,000 tickets sold, followed by "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which opens July 29, at 15.7 percent with nearly 99,000 advance reservations.
