SEOUL, Jan. 28(Yonhap) – K-pop superband BTS has swept 8 categories, including the “Artist of the Year” Digital Music Award and Physical Album Award, at this year’s 11th Gaon Chart Music Awards, held at Jamsil Arena in Songpa-gu, Seoul, on Jan. 27 afternoon.
“Artist of the Year” Award of the Gaon Chart Music Awards gives album awards quarterly and song awards monthly.
BTS received the “Artist of the Year” Digital Music Awards of May, July, and October for three songs, “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” and “My Universe,” a collaborated song with Coldplay. The trophy of Album Award for the third quarter went to BTS as well with “Butter.”
The group also received the “Retail Album of the Year Award,” “Music Steady Seller of the Year Award,” “Social Hot Star of the Year Award,” and “MuBeat Global Choice Award.”
BTS members, who couldn’t make it to the awards ceremony, said in a video released after the announcement of the “Retail Album of the Year Award,” "We’re thankful since this award is given to the most loved album of the year,” adding, “We will pay back with better songs and better performances.”
“Music Queen” IU won five trophies, including the “Record Production of the Year Award.” The singer also won trophies with her hit songs “Celebrity”(January) · “LILAC”(March) · “Strawberry Moon”(October) and was honored to win the “Lyricist of the Year Award.”
IU, who also won the “Record Production of the Year Award” with her agency Edam Entertainment, delivered her speech through the video, "It's fun to collect the awards," smiling, "When I become loose someday, I will pull myself together by looking at the treble clef of this awad.”
In the digital music category, ▲Tae-yeon's "What Do I Call You" in December, 2020 ▲ SHINee's "Don't Call Me" in February, 2021 ▲ Kang Daniel's "Antidote" in April ▲ Brave Girls' "Chi Mat Ba Ram" in June ▲ Red Velvet's "Queendom" in August ▲ TWICE's “SCIENTIST” in November, won the awards.
