SEOUL, June 11 (Yonhap) -- SEVENTEEN has been appointed as UNESCO's Goodwill Ambassador for Youth, marking the first time a K-pop artist has received this honor, according to Pledis Entertainment on June 11. This appointment also represents UNESCO's inaugural designation of a youth ambassador.

 

Pledis Entertainment emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "SEVENTEEN is the first K-pop artist to be officially recognized as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. This appointment acknowledges their global influence and connection with youth worldwide, as showcased through their music and continuous growth since their debut in 2015."

 

UNESCO appoints Goodwill Ambassadors from various fields who possess global recognition and influence. Previous appointees include opera singer and conductor Plácido Domingo, Real Madrid footballer Vinícius Júnior, and Spanish actress Rossy de Palma.

 

SEVENTEEN has been promoting messages of hope and perseverance through their music, encouraging youth to overcome challenges together. They have also actively participated in philanthropic activities, spreading positive influence.

 

Through their partnership with UNESCO, SEVENTEEN has supported the "#GoingTogether" campaign to highlight the importance of education. This initiative has led to the establishment of two community learning centers in East Timor and educational support in Malawi.

 

In November, SEVENTEEN took the stage at the 13th UNESCO Youth Forum in Paris, advocating for youth solidarity and education as pivotal elements for shaping the future of young people and the planet.

 

SEVENTEEN will attend their appointment ceremony as youth ambassadors on June 26 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The group will meet with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and deliver an acceptance speech outlining their plans and sentiments regarding their new role.
