SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- The Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival, one of Korea’s most prominent platforms for short films, is set to return this fall after a four-year hiatus, organizers said Friday.

The 21st edition of the festival is currently in preparation, with a newly formed executive committee consisting of seven acclaimed Korean filmmakers: Jang Jae-hyun, Han Jun-hee, Yoon Ga-eun, Um Tae-hwa, Lee Sang-geun, Lee Ok-seop, and Cho Sung-hee.

“All of us were once discovered through the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival, and it offered us numerous opportunities to develop our careers,” the committee said in a joint statement. “Now we want to give back to emerging creators by supporting the next generation.”

This year’s festival aims to go beyond film screenings and awards by establishing new programs that connect creators with the film industry. These include initiatives to foster meaningful exchanges between directors, producers, actors, investors, and screenwriters.

The festival is organized by film magazine Cine21, with Naver serving as the main sponsor.

Launched in 2002, the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival has long been regarded as a stepping stone for aspiring filmmakers and actors hoping to enter the commercial film industry. It suspended operations after its 20th edition in 2021.

At the time, festival organizers cited the COVID-19 pandemic and rapid changes in the theater and media environment as key reasons, noting they were taking time to “reflect on the future role of short films and short film festivals.”
