SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Yonhap) -- TV series "Serendipity's Embrace," starring Kim So-hyun and Chae Jong-hyeop and centered around the theme of first love, ended with a 3% viewership rating.
According to Nielsen Korea on the 14th, the final episode (Episode 8) of tvN's Serendipity's Embrace aired the previous day, garnering a rating of 3.096%, lower than its premiere episode's peak of 3.877%.
The final episode concluded with the protagonists, Lee Hong-joo (played by Kim So-hyun) and Kang Hu-young (played by Chae Jong-hyeop), finding their happy ending. In the story, Kang Hu-young's mother, Baek Do-seon (played by Kim Jung-nan), tries to lure her son back to the U.S. by threatening him with a lawsuit over alleged company secrets. Faced with the necessity of leaving for the U.S., Hu-young invites Hong-joo to go with him. However, Hong-joo hesitates to leave behind the life she cherishes. Respecting her decision, Hu-young promises, "I'll come back to your world."
On the day Hu-young is set to leave for the U.S., Hong-joo appears at the airport with her luggage, declaring, "This isn't a coincidence; I found you." The two realize that the series of coincidences in their lives was fate, and they depart for the U.S. together.
Serendipity's Embrace received praise for its balanced use of common melodrama elements and for focusing on the central storyline of the two main characters over its eight-episode run. Kim So-hyun portrayed the bright and quirky Lee Hong-joo, while Chae Jong-hyeop delicately depicted Kang Hu-young, who couldn't forget his first love. Both actors ranked highly in the weekly buzzworthy actors list by Good Data Corporation, with Chae Jong-hyeop taking first place and Kim So-hyun second.
However, the drama's ratings remained between 2-3%, partly due to overlapping with the broadcast period of the Paris Olympics.
