Horror film 'Salmokji' tops box office for 12 straight days

SEOUL, April 20 (Yonhap) -- The horror film "Salmokji," directed by Lee Sang-min, topped the local box office for the second consecutive weekend, data showed Monday.

 

According to the Korean Film Council, the film drew about 472,000 moviegoers from April 17 to 19, accounting for 50.1 percent of total ticket sales, to rank No. 1.

 

Since its release on April 8, "Salmokji" has held the top spot for 12 consecutive days, bringing its cumulative audience to approximately 1.46 million.

 

The film tells the story of employees working for a road-view mapping service who enter a reservoir called Salmokji to film street footage and encounter mysterious events.

 

Actress Kim Hye-yoon, appearing in a horror film for the first time, plays Soo-in, a producer on the filming team. Lee Jong-won, Kim Jun-han and Kim Young-sung also star in the film.

 

The sci-fi blockbuster "Project Hail Mary" ranked second over the weekend with about 170,000 viewers and a 19.9 percent revenue share, lifting its total audience to around 2.29 million.

 

Director Jang Hang-jun’s "The King's Warden" came in third with 104,000 viewers and a 10.8 percent share.

 

With a cumulative audience of about 16.58 million, "The King's Warden" remains the second most-watched film in Korean box office history, following "Roaring Currents."

 

"My Name Is," directed by Jung Ji-young and starring Yum Hye-ran, ranked fourth with about 100,000 viewers.

 

As of 9 a.m., "Ran 12.3," set to open April 22, topped the advance reservation chart with a 17.2 percent booking rate, followed by "The Devil Wears Prada 2," scheduled for release on April 29, with 16.2 percent.

 

"Jjanggu," directed by and starring Jung Woo, ranked third in reservations with 12.9 percent.

 

"Salmokji" placed fourth in advance bookings at 9.7 percent, but ranked first among films currently in theaters.
