SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- A video promoting Kimjang (also known as Gimjang) culture, South Korea’s UNESCO Intangible Heritage, has been released.

The 1 minute and 30 seconds length of video, titled “[UNESCO] The culture of Gimjang | Keeping the tradition alive,” was organized by Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University, narrated by actor Ahn Sung-ki and co-produced by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation.

A version with English subtitles will be released to the world as well (youtu.be/Wt2e1B92SvA).

The video begins by explaining kimjang culture. “Tradition of making large quantities of kimchi to sustain Koreans through the long winter months,” narrates the video.

“The culture of Gimjang is recognized by the world as Korea’s unique cultural heritage.”

“This traditional family and communal cultural process has been passed down through generation and descends time.”

“Koreans prepare and share kimchi ‘together’ over a long period. So, the kimchi you eat today is a piece of Korean history and culture and evidence of shared traditions,” introduces the video.

The producers visited the Head House of Pak Se-dang to film the families and neighbors doing kimjang. This shows how a tradition passes down through generations.

“Gimjang is the most accessible Korean legacy in our everyday life. Traditional values live on as we prepare and share kimchi together,” adds the narration.

The video is one of the series, produced by the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation and Professor Seo, promoting Korea’s Intangible Cultural Heritage to the world. This is their second episode after “Hansan Mosi.”

Seo will spread the video through social media and will share it on communities of Koreans living or studying overseas.

“I was delighted to introduce our country’s kimjang culture. I wish for many Internet users to watch the video,” said Ahn.

The professor plans to introduce more cultural heritages such as Culture of Jeju Haenyeo (Women Divers) and Arirang.
