LONDON, Feb. 25 (Yonhap) – K-pop superband BTS has been announced as the winners of IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award again.

IFPI, the organisation that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has announced global superstars BTS as the winners of 2020’s IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award.

IFPI announced on Feb. 24(UK Time) that BTS has topped the Global Recording Artist of the Year for 2 consecutive years in 2021.

IFPI has been selecting pop artists and groups worldwide as global artists since 2013.

BTS became the first Asian act to win the accolade, beating British and American pop stars last year, and the group has also won the first place in 2 consecutive years for the first time.

BTS topped the U.S. Billboard's main singles chart "HOT 100" with “Butter” for 10 weeks in 2021, while "Permission to Dance" and "My Universe," which collaborated with the band Coldplay, also ranked No. 1 on the list.

Moreover, the group topped the Oricon’s yearly album chart with the Japanese album for the first time in 37 years as an overseas group.

IFPI said, “BTS’ phenomenal success over the last year is a testament to their creativity, hard work and ongoing commitment to continuing to find ways to bring their music to the world. By performing in three different languages, they demonstrate their extraordinarily unique global appeal and their dynamic and passionate fanbase has helped to make them the first artists in history to top the Global Artist Chart in two consecutive years.”

IFPI ranks global artists by adding up measured values of physical album sales, digital downloads, and audio and video streaming platforms.

IFPI said the group Seventeen made their first chart appearance at #9, demonstrating the growing popularity of K-Pop with music fans across the globe.
