SEOUL, Apr. 13 (Yonhap) -- With the sky road that was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic gradually opening, the demand for the overseas travel has been increasing.
In particular, it has been found that instead of traveling to neighboring countries, more people chose to travel destinations with longer flight hours in order to fulfill their suppressed travel sentiment.
Gmarket and Auction began to analyze the big data of overseas travel products for last month (March 11-April 10) right after the news that quarantine upon entry for those vaccinated has been demolished. The results they announced on the 13th was the following.
During this period, the overseas ticket sales surged more than 9 times, and local tour products was also sold more than 8 times.
Contrarily, the sales for the domestic ticket sales had little change with the sales increasing for only 3%.
For the travel destinations, there was a tendency to travel to a more distant country than nearby destinations.
When the flight sales tickets were analyzed, Cambodia (6 hours flight from South Korea), Los Angeles (11 hours flight from South Korea), and Hawaii (8 hours flight from South Korea) ranked first to third respectively for the most popular destinations in South Korea.
This shows a big difference compared to 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic as Osaka (2 hours flight from South Korea), Da Nang (5 hours flight from South Korea) and Fukuoka (1 hour flight from South Korea) were ranked first to third respectively in South Korea.
Along with that, while the proportion of male customers was 43% in 2019, for the first time this year, it surpassed the female customers with 51%. Additionally, the proportion of customers in their 50s and older accounted for 32%, which is an increase from 3 years ago (24%).
Gmarket analyzed that travel destinations with longer flight hours has gained its popularity as when people were hesitant to go for long travel destinations before, people now are not due to the compensation sentiment for overseas travel that they had suppressed for years.
