SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Yonhap) -- A stage performance of "Life of Pi" starring actor Park Jung-min was abruptly canceled just minutes before curtain-up due to technical issues with lighting equipment, industry sources said Wednesday.
The performance, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at GS Arts Center in Seoul, was called off five minutes before it was set to begin.
The cast for the show included Park, Hwang Man-ik, Joo Ah and Jin Sang-hyun. Some audience members voiced complaints over the last-minute cancellation.
The production company said a sudden technical malfunction occurred in some lighting equipment and that despite attempts to restore it, the show could not proceed.
“The lighting equipment failed to operate properly, and we decided to cancel the performance after considering safety concerns,” the company said, apologizing to audience members for the inconvenience.
The company said it will announce details regarding compensation and conduct a comprehensive inspection of the venue’s technical conditions before deciding whether to resume performances.
"Life of Pi" is based on Yann Martel’s novel "Life of Pi" and tells the story of a boy named Pi who struggles to survive while adrift in the Pacific Ocean after a cargo ship accident. The production adopts a “Live on Stage” format combining puppetry, video and music. Park returned to the stage in the role of Pi for the first time in eight years.
