SEOUL, July 9 (Yonhap) -- CJ Olive Young said Thursday it will introduce an AI-powered shopping assistant to improve the shopping experience for foreign customers.

 

The kiosk-based service enables shoppers to interact with an AI avatar in real time while shopping independently. Available in eight languages, it provides product information, inventory checks, in-store location guidance and personalized product recommendations based on customers' skin characteristics and preferences.

 

The AI shopping assistant will initially be introduced at multi-level stores with a high proportion of foreign visitors and strong demand for shopping assistance.

 

Olive Young said the new service will allow customers to access basic information, such as payment methods and tax refund procedures, through touchscreens, enabling store employees to focus more on professional consultations and customer service.

 

The retailer will also introduce an AI interpretation service for consultations with staff using portable translation devices. By incorporating AI technology, the upgraded service improves translation accuracy and convenience and supports 38 languages.

 

Customers can either scan a QR code displayed by store staff to join a real-time chat or use microphones on in-store tablets to communicate with employees by voice.

 

The system has been trained on data tailored to the K-beauty shopping environment, allowing it to accurately translate industry-specific terminology. This enables customers to explain their skincare concerns in their native languages while receiving detailed guidance from staff on ingredients and product usage.

 

An Olive Young official said the company will continue to enhance its AI-based in-store services for global customers and expand them to stores nationwide.

 

"We will continue to create a shopping environment without language barriers so that customers from around the world can experience K-beauty up close, further establishing Olive Young as a global K-beauty hub," the official said.
