SEOUL, May 12 (Yonhap) -- K-pop supergroup BTS drew a total of 150,000 fans during three concerts held in Mexico City as part of its world tour “ARIRANG,” its agency BigHit Music said Tuesday.

The concerts took place on May 7 and May 9-10 local time. It marked BTS’ first group concert in Mexico in 10 years and 10 months since July 2015. Tickets for all three shows sold out immediately after reservations opened.

BTS incorporated elements of local culture into the performances, showing special consideration for Mexican fans.

The group performed “Airplane pt.2,” which includes the lyric “We goin’ from Mexico City,” while dancers wearing traditional Mexican lucha libre masks appeared during “Aliens.” Member V also picked up local snacks from a banderia stand set up inside the venue while performing “IDOL.”

The members thanked fans, saying, “You were truly the best,” and promised to return to Mexico again. They also greeted fans in Spanish, saying they would never forget the excitement that began at Zocalo Square.

Local authorities estimated that about 35,000 additional people gathered outside the venue during the May 9-10 concerts, causing some nearby roads to be temporarily closed.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum invited the BTS members to the presidential palace, adding that more than 1 million people attempted to purchase tickets.

The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce estimated the concerts would generate about US$107.5 million in economic impact through ticket sales, air travel, lodging, dining and local consumption.

BTS will continue its tour with concerts in Stanford, California, on May 16-17 and 19, followed by shows in Las Vegas on May 23-24 and 27-28.

The group will then hold concerts at Busan Asiad Main Stadium on June 12-13. The June 13 show will coincide with the 13th anniversary of BTS’ debut, making it a meaningful occasion for both the group and its fandom, ARMY.
