SEOUL, June 16 (Yonhap) -- The live-action adaptation of the animated film "How to Train Your Dragon" has held onto the top spot at the weekend box office for two consecutive weeks, beating out the Korean superhero film "Hi.5".
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticket sales data on Monday, Dean DeBlois’ "How to Train Your Dragon" attracted around 318,000 viewers (36.7 percent revenue share) from June 13 to 15, securing first place at the box office. Its cumulative audience has reached about 977,000.
After debuting at No. 1 on the weekend of June 6–8, the film temporarily lost the top spot to "Hi.5" on weekdays, but reclaimed it over the weekend.
"Hi.5" came in second with approximately 228,000 viewers (24.3 percent), raising its total audience to about 1.5 million.
In third place was the occult film "Shinmyeong", produced by political YouTube channel Open Sympathy TV and inspired by former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s wife Kim Keon-hee. It added about 119,000 viewers (13.0 percent), for a cumulative total of 580,000.
"Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" ("Mission: Impossible 8") ranked fourth with around 112,000 viewers (12.3 percent), bringing its total audience to 3.17 million.
Fifth place went to the Japanese short animation "Magic Candies", based on the picture book by Baek Hee-na. It drew about 22,000 viewers (1.3 percent), with cumulative attendance at 95,000 — an exceptional figure for a short animation, nearing the 100,000 mark.
With several new releases coming from the 18th, changes in box office rankings are expected.
As of 8 a.m. that day, the top pre-sale ticket rate was for the Brad Pitt-led racing film "F1: The Movie", which opens on June 25. It holds a 23.1 percent reservation rate with about 32,000 pre-booked tickets.
Following behind are the zombie film "28 Years Later", opening June 19 (14.0 percent, 19,000 tickets), and Disney·Pixar’s animated film "Elio", hitting theaters on the 18th (11.2 percent, 15,000 tickets).
