aespa to release remake of Seo Taiji's mega hit
K-pop girl group aespa will release a remake of a legendary singer-songwriter’s hit song next week, its agency said on Tuesday.
“Sidae Yugam,” presented in the fourth album of Seo Taiji and Boys in 1995, garnered immense popularity for its straightforward and powerful message in the alternative rock genre.
At the time, government authorities pre-screened the lyrics expressing disillusionment with the privileged class. In protest of the censorship, Seo Taiji included only the instrumental version on the album.
The incident stirred nationwide campaign by fans, leading to the policy’s termination in 1996 and earning Seo Taiji the nickname: “Korea’s cultural president.” The complete version of Sidae Yugam, with lyrics, was finally released as a single in 1996 after Seo Taiji and Boys' retirement.
The 2024 version of Sidae Yugam by aespa will be presented through SM's digital music channel “STATION" at 6 p.m. on Jan. 15. The channel is available on major music platforms including Melon, Flo, Genie, iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, QQ Music, Kugou Music, and Kuwo Music.
The new Sidae Yugam adds each members' unique colors and twists in musical arrangement to the energetic band sound of the original, according to aespa’s management, SM Entertainment.
Prior to aespa’s EP release, the remastered version of Seo Taiji's Sidae Yugam will be released Friday on Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. The remastering is part of the “SM Remastering Project” initiated in 2021 by SM and YouTube, aimed at highlighting the history of K-pop.
