SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) -- "The series differs greatly from traditional mystery dramas. I think it's a work with many adorable aspects."

Actor Son Suk-ku shared his thoughts during the press conference for Disney+’s upcoming series Nine Puzzles, held on the 21st (local time) at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. He noted, "I played a character who feels like a cartoon figure, someone you might not encounter in real life."

Set to premiere next year, Nine Puzzles is a mystery thriller that unfolds as a profiler named Lee Na, the sole witness to an unsolved case from 10 years ago, confronts a serial murder case alongside detective Han Saem, who suspects her as a potential culprit.

Kim Da-mi transforms into Lee Na, the profiler, while Son Suk-ku plays Han Saem, the detective who distrusts her.

Son Suk-ku described his character, Han Saem, as a detective with a distinctive flair. "He often wears a black beanie, showcasing a fashion sense not typically associated with detectives," he said. "I tried to use unique outfits to define the character. I wanted to maintain a strong image while also displaying various facets of him."

Kim Da-mi explained her approach to Lee Na, saying, "Lee Na has a delicate side she tries to hide, and I focused on revealing these inner scars little by little." She added, "Lee Na is also a cartoonish character, so I aimed to balance her serious demeanor while solving cases with a different, lighter side when interacting with Han Saem."

The series is directed by Yoon Jong-bin, known for films such as Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014), Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time (2012), and the Netflix original series Narco-Saints (2022).

Director Yoon shared his journey with the project: "After Narco-Saints, I was physically and mentally drained, and I vowed not to take on another OTT production. But the script was so captivating that I couldn't resist."

He elaborated, "The story of tracking a serial killer was highly immersive, and the twists and turns constantly defied my expectations. Plus, the unique characters, unlike anything I'd seen in traditional thrillers or detective stories, intrigued me and made me consider taking on the project."

Nine Puzzles is also notable as Yoon Jong-bin’s first work where he didn’t write the script himself.

"I focused on maintaining tension throughout and creating devices that would spark viewers' imaginations," Yoon said. "We also worked hard to introduce turning points with new characters or developments in every episode," he concluded.
