SEOUL, July 1 (Yonhap) -- Singer Kim Gun-mo released his first new song in a decade, "Where Am I Heading Now?," at 6 p.m. Wednesday, his agency Kunum Planning said.
It marks his first new release since "50," the album commemorating the 25th anniversary of his debut, which came out in 2016.
"Where Am I Heading Now?" is a remake of the title track from singer Jeon Young's first album, released in 1977. While preserving the original's lyrical melody, Kim rearranged the song with minimal instrumentation to better highlight his restrained yet resonant vocals.
Notably, Kim performed the song while playing an acoustic guitar himself for the first time, instead of the piano, the instrument long associated with him.
"This is a song Kim has sung countless times while devoting himself to practicing the guitar alone over a long period," the agency said. "It contains an autobiographical confession reflecting the years he spent comforting and encouraging himself."
Original composer Lee Hyun-seop and lyricist Lee Kyung-mi, a married couple, welcomed Kim's remake, saying it felt "like an unexpected gift."
"As this is the first song on which I played the guitar while singing, I hope it gives many people a chance to see a new side of Kim Gun-mo," the singer said.
Kim returned to the music scene after a six-year hiatus through a nationwide concert tour held from September last year to March this year, performing in Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Seoul.
During the tour, he expressed his enthusiasm for continuing his music career, saying, "I want to grow into a charming old man and always remain by your side."
