SEOUL, July 31 (Yonhap) -- Comedy film "Pilot," featuring Jo Jung-suk in a cross-dressing role, has surpassed 230,000 advance ticket sales as of its release day, making it the most pre-sold Korean summer film this year.
According to the integrated computer network for movie ticket sales, "Pilot," which opens on July 31, had an advance audience count of approximately 231,000 and a reservation rate of 41.4% as of 7 a.m. This figure marks the highest pre-sale volume among Korean summer films this year.
Several Korean films released since mid-July, including "Hijacking" (1.77 million viewers), "Handsome Guys" (1.74 million viewers), "Escape" (2.36 million viewers), and "Escape: Project Silence" (680,000 viewers), have failed to achieve significant box office success. The industry is now keenly observing whether "Pilot" can reverse this trend.
Directed by Kim Han-gyeol, "Pilot" tells the story of Han Jung-woo (played by Jo Jung-suk), a pilot who becomes unemployed overnight and re-applies to an airline using his sister's name, Han Jung-mi (played by Han Sun-hwa). The film humorously depicts the chaos that ensues as Han Jung-woo navigates life as a woman, highlighted by Jo Jung-suk's adept comedic performance.
