Christian Moran of crossover band Shinbak Circle passes away at 42

SEOUL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- Christian Moran, the drummer of four-member Korean traditional music crossover jazz band Shinbak Circle, has died at the age of 42.

 

The British-born musician died Saturday, according to those close to him.

 

Moran graduated with top honors from the University of West London and the Berklee College of Music in the United States. He studied under Grammy Award-winning drummers Terri Lyne Carrington and Mark Walker.

 

In 2018, he co-founded Shinbak Circle with saxophonist Shin Hyun-pil, gayageum player Park Kyung-so and bassist Seo Young-do. The band's name was created by combining one syllable from each member's name.

 

Shinbak Circle earned Korean Music Awards nominations in jazz-related categories with the albums "Topology" in 2020 and "Pseudoscience" in 2022.

 

Moran also performed with Grammy Award-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, jazz double bassist Eddie Gomez and percussionist Jamey Haddad.

 

Throughout his career, he appeared at renowned venues and music festivals in South Korea and abroad, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Southbank Centre in London and the PlayStation Theater in New York.

 

As the leader of the MCL Quartet, Moran released the albums "Live at Ryles Jazz Club" and "Modern Rhythmic Usage."

 

In 2024, he also co-authored "Drum Sheet Music for Intermediate and Advanced Players."

 

He is survived by his Korean spouse.

 

A memorial altar has been set up at Samsung Medical Center Funeral Hall in Seoul. The funeral procession is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Monday.
