SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- Architectural heritage from the mid- and late Joseon Dynasty that offers a glimpse into the Buddhist culture and daily life of the period has been designated as state treasures.
The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) said Tuesday it has designated 10 subsidiary Buddhist halls and monks' quarters, including Geungnakjeon Hall at Hyeondeungsa Temple in Gapyeong and Birojeon Hall at Gagyeonsa Temple in Goesan, as treasures.
Subsidiary Buddhist halls are worship halls located apart from a temple's main Buddha hall. They include Nahanjeon, Yeongsanjeon, Wontongjeon and Birojeon halls.
The newly designated treasures include Geungnakjeon Hall at Hyeondeungsa Temple in Gapyeong, Birojeon Hall at Gagyeonsa Temple in Goesan, Yeongsanjeon Hall at Seonunsa Temple in Gochang, Wontongjeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon, Eungjindang Hall at Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon and Eungjinjeon Hall at Girimsa Temple in Gyeongju.
"Most of these buildings were constructed or rebuilt between the 17th and 19th centuries, and they preserve the stylistic characteristics and construction techniques of traditional wooden architecture from the late Joseon period," the agency said.
Monks' quarters are residential buildings within Buddhist temples that include meditation halls and Inbeopdang halls, which are used for Buddhist services and daily life.
Also designated as treasures were Muryangsugak Hall at Yeongcheonam Hermitage of Boseoksa Temple in Geumsan, South Chungcheong Province; Seolseondang Hall at Janggoksa Temple in Cheongyang; Seolseondang Hall and monks' quarters at Naesosa Temple in Buan; and Jeonghyewon Hall at Sungnimsa Temple in Iksan.
The agency said the buildings are valuable because they were built as spaces for monks' religious practice and daily life, reflecting changes in monastic living over time.
The Korea Heritage Service has been working with the Buddhist community to survey subsidiary halls and monks' quarters, which have received relatively less attention than Buddha halls and stone pagodas, as part of efforts to have them designated as treasures.
