SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- Singer-actress IU said she would take greater responsibility following controversy surrounding alleged historical distortions in MBC's Friday-Saturday series, "Perfect Crown."

“Whenever I disappoint people even a little or show shortcomings, it is all my fault,” IU said. “I will do better with a greater sense of responsibility.”

She made the remarks Saturday during a group viewing event for the show’s finale at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul.

IU, who celebrated her birthday the same day, watched the final episode with fans before appearing on stage.

“I’ve had a lot on my mind lately. It was something I should have done better,” she said. “As someone who receives your love, I will work harder. I will not waste a single moment and will strive to become an IU who can show you even better sides of myself with greater responsibility.”

She added, “Everything you say has a reason, and I believe they are all things I should accept. If there are shortcomings, please point them out, scold me and push me harder so I can work to become a better person.”

Although IU did not directly mention “Perfect Crown,” her remarks came immediately after the screening of the final episode and were widely interpreted as addressing the controversy surrounding the drama.

The controversy erupted after Episode 11, which aired Friday, showed courtiers shouting “cheonse” -- a term historically used by vassal states -- instead of “manse,” a symbol of sovereignty, during the coronation ceremony of Grand Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo-seok.

Some viewers also criticized the production for depicting the king wearing a nine-string ceremonial crown traditionally associated with Chinese subjects rather than the 12-string crown used by emperors of sovereign states, calling it a distortion of history.

The production team issued an apology, saying, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern over issues related to the drama’s fictional worldview setting and historical accuracy.”

The team added that it would revise the relevant audio and subtitles as quickly as possible for rebroadcasts, video-on-demand services and online streaming platforms.

Despite the controversy, the drama ended with its highest viewership rating of 13.8 percent nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea.
