SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) -- The 24th Ulleung Squid Festival will take place from July 17 to 19 around Jeodong Port on Ulleung Island in North Gyeongsang Province, organizers said Wednesday.

According to Ulleung County, the county festival committee decided to move the annual event from its usual August schedule to July this year in an effort to boost tourism demand during the off-peak period before the summer vacation season.

The festival will feature a variety of programs, including squid-catching by hand, squid tasting events, sea loach-catching activities, a "Pimac" party combining dried squid and beer, and cultural performances.

Organizers have also expanded hands-on programs that allow visitors to experience the island's natural environment, culture and fishing industry.

New additions include the Hwang U-ru Song Festival, honoring the late composer behind the hit song "Ulleungdo Twist"; a squid fishing boat tour; an urban sketching program showcasing the island's scenery; and a nighttime stargazing event.

Trot singer Song Ga-in and the Daegu Wind Orchestra will also perform during the festival.

Kim Su-han, chairman of the Ulleung County Festival Committee, said, "This year, we adjusted the festival schedule and reorganized the overall program so that more visitors can enjoy the event."
