SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- Acclaimed South Korean director Lee Chang-dong's new film "Possible Love" will open in select domestic theaters on Sept. 23 before its global release on Netflix in November, the streaming platform said Tuesday.

 

"Possible Love" follows two married couples brought together through the making of a documentary. As a laid-off worker and his wife meet a documentary filmmaker and her husband, the four confront their contrasting lives and hidden desires.

 

The film stars Jeon Do-yeon, Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong as the two couples.

 

It marks Lee's first feature film in eight years since "Burning" (2018) and was produced by Netflix. The film is reportedly inspired by Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski's 1989 television drama series "Dekalog."

 

The film will have its world premiere in the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in September. It is the second consecutive Korean film to compete for the festival's top prize following Park Chan-wook's "No Other Choice" last year.

 

Lee will return to the Venice Film Festival red carpet for the first time in 24 years since "Oasis" competed at the festival in 2002.

 

After its Venice premiere, the film will also be screened at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival before opening in Korean theaters later in September.

 

"Possible Love" will premiere on Netflix on Nov. 6.
