SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) – James Cameron’s mega-hit film “Avatar: The Way of Water” has been topping the South Korean box office for 5 straight weeks, according to data released from the Korean Film Council.
The sci-fi blockbuster has garnered another 392,000 moviegoers over the past weekend, from Jan. 13 to 15, continuing its box office reign. This sequel to Avatar has so far attracted more than 9.414 million viewers since its release on Dec. 14. Considering how the sequel has had about 50,000 daily viewers and hundreds of thousands of viewers every weekend, this Disney sensation is expected to exceed the goal of 10 million cumulative audiences during the New Year’s holidays (Jan.21 to 24).
The 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar exceeded 10 million cumulative viewers as the first non-Korean language movie in only 38 days since its release.
“The First Slam Dunk,” the Japanese animated version of the 90’s legend manga series “Slam Dunk,” attracted 345,000 moviegoers over the past weekend and ranked No.2 at the box office; the movie, written and directed by the manga illustrator himself, has exceeded more than 934,000 audiences so far and is anticipated to exceed 1 million anytime soon.
“Hero,” a homegrown musical film about Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun, remained at No.3, followed by Universal Pictures’ “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” at No.4 and a South Korean comedy film “Switch” remaining at No.5.
