SEOUL, April 9 (Yonhap) -- Singer-actor Cha Eun-woo, currently serving in the military, issued another apology over allegations of large-scale tax evasion, saying he has paid all related taxes.
In a late night post on social media on Wednesday, Cha said, “I sincerely apologize for causing disappointment and confusion to fans and many others due to the recent tax controversy involving me.”
“I respect the procedures and results of the National Tax Service and have paid all related taxes to prevent further confusion,” he added.
The controversy emerged after reports on Jan. 22 said the National Tax Service had notified Cha of additional income tax assessments exceeding 20 billion won, raising suspicions of tax evasion.
At the time, Cha said he was sorry and would faithfully comply with the ongoing tax procedures, adding that he would humbly accept the final judgment by relevant authorities and take responsibility accordingly.
About two months later, he issued another apology, saying, “Having received so much love and support, I take this matter very seriously.”
“If there were aspects I failed to carefully review, the responsibility lies entirely with me,” he said. “I will not avoid it by saying I didn’t know or that it was someone else’s judgment.”
Cha also addressed allegations that he had signed a management service contract with a company established by his mother and benefited from a lower corporate tax rate instead of a higher income tax rate.
“I established the corporation in the process of preparing to continue my activities more stably during a period of various changes and confusion,” he said. “Looking back, there were parts I did not sufficiently examine, and the responsibility lies with me, not my family or company.”
He added that he was most sorry for disappointing fans.
His agency Fantagio also issued an apology on its official website, saying it recognizes shortcomings in managing and supporting the artist’s activities and will strengthen its internal management system and decision-making processes to prevent similar cases from recurring.
