SEOUL, July 25 (Yonhap) -- Marvel's blockbuster "Deadpool and Wolverine" has topped the box office, attracting over 200,000 viewers upon its release.
According to the Korea Box Office Information System on the 25th, "Deadpool and Wolverine" drew approximately 230,000 viewers (accounting for 56.0% of sales) on its opening day, securing the number one spot.
"Deadpool and Wolverine," rated R for mature audiences, is the third installment in the "Deadpool" series, featuring the eccentric superhero Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds), known for his incessant 19+ jokes. The film has garnered attention for the crossover with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) from the "X-Men" series.
While the film is praised for its intense action and humor, some viewers have criticized it for the perceived entry barriers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The CGV Golden Egg rating, reflecting actual audience reviews, stands at 88%.
The Hollywood animation "Despicable Me 4," which also premiered on the same day, ranked second with 73,000 viewers (15.8%).
"Escape," starring Lee Je-hoon and Koo Kyo-hwan, which had been in the top spot since its release on the 18th, dropped to third place with 35,000 viewers (8.0%). The film's total audience has surpassed 2.04 million, making it the first Korean film released this summer to reach the 2 million mark.
