*Editor’s note: The number of global Hallyu (Korean Wave) fans is approaching approximately 225 million, according to the 2024 report by the Korea Foundation. The surge in fans marks the dawn of the "Digital Silk Road" era, where communication transcends the limitations of time and space, enabling real-time interaction across the globe. Truly, we are in the era of "Hallyu 4.0."

AI is already bringing innovative changes to the design field and providing new opportunities for designers. The utilization of AI in design is gaining attention as a new approach to understanding and solving user problems.
By using AI in various aspects such as data-based insights, automation, personalization, and efficient prototyping, designers can develop more effective and creative design solutions. Adapting to these changes will be crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the future design environment.
The impact of AI on the design field can be explored from several perspectives:
Data Analysis and Insights: AI quickly analyzes vast amounts of data to provide insights into user behavior, preferences, and current trends. This allows designers to make more informed design decisions and develop customized solutions that meet customer needs.
Automation of Repetitive Tasks: AI automates repetitive and time-consuming design tasks. For example, image editing, color adjustment, and layout creation can be handled by AI tools, allowing designers to focus more on creative and strategic work. This enhances the efficiency of the entire design process.
Personalized User Experience: AI delivers personalized experiences based on user data. Personalized recommendations, tailored content, and specialized UI/UX designs help better meet customer needs, improving user engagement and satisfaction.
Fast Prototyping and Testing: AI-powered design software enables rapid prototyping and testing. Designers can compare different design options, collect user feedback efficiently, and make improvements, all while saving time and costs, thus increasing quality.
Idea Generation through Pattern Learning: AI learns from existing design patterns to suggest new ideas. These suggestions stimulate the designer's creative thinking and assist in discovering new approaches.
Additionally, through generative design, where AI helps explore innovative design solutions based on the conditions and constraints provided by the designer, new possibilities can be discovered.
◇ Necessity of Adopting a "Design Thinking" Strategy
With the application of AI in design, the concept of "Design Thinking" is gaining renewed attention. It is a human-centered approach and mindset aimed at solving problems and generating innovative ideas. Inspired by the way designers approach problem-solving, it is now applicable across various industries and problem situations.
Design Thinking aims to balance the needs of people, technical possibilities, and business success potential.
The core principle of Design Thinking is Human-Centered Design. It focuses on understanding the needs and experiences of users and solving their problems, deeply exploring user issues through Empathy.
Another key principle is Collaboration. Experts from different fields collaborate to generate creative ideas. In design, this principle suggests an interdisciplinary approach, offering new perspectives.
The principles of Iterative Process and Problem Redefinition emphasize experimenting and testing repeatedly, gradually improving solutions. Failure is seen as an opportunity to learn, and the process involves redefining the problem from various viewpoints starting from the initial problem definition. It is an important principle to explore the essence of the problem and provide fundamental solutions.
Design Thinking has the advantage of approaching problems with a human-centered perspective, leading to innovative solutions. It emphasizes collaboration and creativity, drawing out various opinions and ideas. Through iterative testing, the likelihood of obtaining effective results increases.
Applying this strategy to business can help in product development, service design, and improving customer experience. In education, it enhances creative problem-solving skills and team collaboration.
In the public service sector, Design Thinking can be applied to design and implement policies that reflect citizens' needs, and can also address complex societal issues such as sustainability, the environment, and health.
Thus, Design Thinking is not just a tool for designers but a powerful methodology that everyone can use to find innovative and creative solutions.
