SEOUL, May 14 (Yonhap) -- Cosmax, a global cosmetics original development manufacturing company, said Wednesday its first-quarter sales rose to a record high on solid global demand for K-beauty products.

Consolidated sales for the January-March period increased 15.9 percent from a year earlier to 682 billion won (US$496 million), marking the company’s highest-ever quarterly revenue, Cosmax said in a regulatory filing.

Operating profit rose 3.3 percent on-year to 53 billion won, while net profit surged 312.1 percent to 43.8 billion won.

The company attributed the growth to strong performances from its Korean operations and expanding sales in the United States and China.

Sales at its Korean unit climbed 17 percent to 423.2 billion won, supported by steady global demand for K-skincare products.

Its Chinese unit posted quarterly sales of 194.7 billion won, up 20 percent from a year earlier and also a record high, driven by rising orders from emerging beauty brands launching new products.

Sales at its U.S. subsidiary jumped 46 percent to 42 billion won as local indie beauty brands increased new product orders and repeat purchases.

Thailand sales rose 2 percent to 24.3 billion won.

By contrast, sales in Indonesia fell 23 percent to 22.7 billion won due to political uncertainty and weakened consumer sentiment.

The company said it plans to improve performance in Indonesia by diversifying clients and expanding exports to nearby markets, including India.

A Cosmax official said balanced growth across its Korean, Chinese and U.S. operations helped deliver meaningful results amid expanding global K-beauty demand, adding the company will continue strengthening synergies among overseas units and exploring emerging markets.
