SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- Actor Yoo Hae-jin, who scored a box-office hit this year with "The King's Warden," will return to the big screen as a detective investigating the forces behind an assassination attempt.
Production company Hive Media Corp. said Tuesday that "Assassins," starring Yoo as a police detective, will open in September during the Chuseok holiday season.
"Assassins" is based on the shooting that took place during the Aug. 15, 1974, Liberation Day ceremony. During the event, Mun Se-gwang, a second-generation ethnic Korean resident in Japan, fired a handgun in an attempt to assassinate then-President Park Chung-hee. Instead, first lady Yuk Young-soo was struck by a bullet and killed. The film builds on historical records and the unanswered questions surrounding the incident with fictional elements.
Yoo plays Cheol-gu, a detective assigned to security at the scene who questions the findings announced by the official investigative headquarters and sets out to uncover the truth behind the case.
Park Hae-il stars as Jae-hwan, the head of a newspaper's social affairs desk, portraying a veteran reporter who approaches the truth through professional dedication and sharp insight.
Lee Min-ho plays Young-il, a rookie reporter covering the incident.
The film is directed by Hur Jin-ho, known for "Christmas in August," "One Fine Spring Day" and "A Normal Family."
