SEOUL, Dec. 22 (Yonhap) -- Lee Jung-jae, the leading actor of the globally successful Netflix series 'Squid Game,' was named the first promotional ambassador for the 2030 Busan World expo in an appointment ceremony held in Lotte Hotel Seoul, on Dec. 22.
Kim Young-ju, the chairman of the Bid Committee for World Expo 2030 Busan, Yeo Han-koo, the Minister for Trade, Park Heong-joon, the Mayor of Busan, and Choi Jong-moon, the Second Vice Foreign Minister attended the appointment ceremony to congratulate the appointment and discuss future promotional plans.
Lee Jung-jae will take the role of the 2030 Busan World Expo ambassador by participating in promotional videos.
“It’s reassuring to have a global star as an ambassador when we have to compete with big cities including Moscow and Rome. We ask for your support after the appointment ceremony,” said Chairman Kim.
“I think we’re off to a good start as we have the global star as our ambassador. We will actively support the 2030 Busan World Expo, which can promote the vision Korea planned for a better future to the world,” said the Minister of Trade.
In addition to Busan, Russia (in Moscow), Italy (in Rome), Ukraine (in Odesa), and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (in Riyadh) have submitted their applications to host the 2030 World Expo and the host country will be elected in 2023.
If South Korea successfully hosts the 2030 World Expo, it will be held around Busan port from May. 1 to Oct. 31, 2030.
