The Evolution and Challenges of AI Art
Contributed by Lee Eun-jun (professor at Kyungil University)
Film has long been considered a comprehensive form of art, evolving steadily since its birth in the late 19th century when Louis Jean Lumière invented the first cinematograph in 1895.
Over the years, film has absorbed elements from literature, visual art, music, and more. Today, more than 130 years since the first movie, artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining the foundations of cinematic art. We are now in an era where AI can generate entire scenes for films, eliminating traditional filming processes and even the need for actors.
Recently, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced the launch of the "1st Korea AI International Film Festival." As revealed on the 13th, the festival attracted 2,067 submissions from 104 countries worldwide. Organized by the Gyeonggi Content Agency, this marks the largest domestic film festival exclusively for AI-generated films. Out of all entries, 535 works met the eligibility criteria—410 from Korea and 125 from 39 other countries.
A standout feature of this festival is the partnership with AI firm DeepBrain AI, which will assist with technical reviews using a "deepfake detection solution" to verify the authenticity of AI-generated content.
Movies, being both an art and an industry, have always embraced technological advances. Just as photography was once a novel way of appreciating art, film too grew from technological innovation into an established form of art that audiences learned to enjoy. Now, the introduction of AI to cinema represents a new leap for the industry, and as film evolves through AI, the public is ready to appreciate and engage with this new form of creative expression.
However, this advancement does not mean that traditional art forms will disappear. History shows us that traditional painting continued to thrive even when photography emerged as a new artistic medium. Similarly, AI art is not a competitor to traditional art but rather a companion in its evolution.
As I've discussed in previous columns, the value of art lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in the philosophy and process behind it. Just as technology advances, so too does art, and those of us within the artistic community have a responsibility to guide audiences toward new forms of beauty and expression.
There are some who argue that AI-generated art should be distinctly separated from traditional works, but efforts must be made to uncover the true artistic value within these new forms. Understanding AI art is essential for grasping the essence of art itself and for predicting the future of artistic expression.
Based on these efforts, I have identified three key factors that are crucial to appreciating AI art:
Re-evaluating the Meaning and Value of Art: AI art challenges audiences to rethink what constitutes art and opens up new possibilities for creative exploration.
Expanding Creativity Beyond Boundaries: The development of AI art blurs the line between art and technology, offering new pathways for creativity and imagination.
Fostering a Deeper Understanding of Artistic Essence: Viewing AI-generated works encourages contemplation on the essence of art, promoting richer, more diverse artistic experiences and deeper emotional connections.
Thus, AI art should not be dismissed as a mere product of technology. Rather, it deserves to be explored for its artistic merit. As AI continues to evolve, it will play a crucial role in shaping the future of art, pushing boundaries, and enriching our understanding of artistic value.
The exploration of AI's potential will lead to the discovery of new artistic frontiers, contributing to a deeper appreciation of art's true essence.
