Shin Min-a's thriller 'Eyes' vies with 'Toy Story 5' for box office lead

SEOUL, July 3 (Yonhap) -- The thriller "Eyes," starring Shin Min-a, is expected to compete with Disney and Pixar's animated film "Toy Story 5" for the top spot at the South Korean box office over the weekend.

 

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing system on Friday, "Eyes" attracted about 50,000 moviegoers on Thursday, accounting for 31.5 percent of ticket sales revenue to rank No. 1 at the local box office.

 

Directed by Yeom Ji-ho, the film follows Seo Jin, a photographer gradually losing her eyesight due to a hereditary disease, as she investigates the mysterious death of her younger sister, Seo In, and uncovers the secrets surrounding it. Shin plays both Seo Jin and Seo In in dual roles.

 

Since its release on June 24, the film has drawn a cumulative audience of about 482,000.

 

"Toy Story 5" came in second after attracting about 45,000 viewers on Thursday, accounting for 28.0 percent of ticket sales revenue. Its cumulative audience reached about 1.79 million.

 

Director Yeon Sang-ho's zombie film "The Horde" ranked third with about 13,000 moviegoers, followed by Timothée Chalamet's "Marty Supreme" with about 10,000.

 

As of 9 a.m. Friday, "Toy Story 5" led the advance reservation chart with a booking rate of 32.3 percent, ahead of "Eyes." About 82,000 people had reserved tickets for the animated film.

 

"Eyes" ranked second with a reservation rate of 17.8 percent, or about 45,000 advance ticket sales, followed by "Marty Supreme" at 7.3 percent, with about 18,000 reservations.

 

Director Na Hong-jin's "Hope," set to open July 15, was also drawing strong interest, posting a reservation rate of 7.3 percent, equivalent to about 18,000 advance bookings, ahead of its release.
