SEOUL, March 2 (Yonhap) -- Girl group aespa wins three awards at the 19th Korean Music Awards.

The band swept three awards with the hit song “Next Level,” including the grand prize song of the year award, rookie of the year award, and the best K-pop song award, at the ceremony which was held at Nodeul Live House, Nodeulseom, Seoul.

The Korean Music Awards are based not on record sales but music achievement, and a panel composed of music critics, radio show producers, and music industry professionals determine the winners.

Thus, it is unusual for a rookie girl group to win the most awards at the ceremony.

The group debuted in Nov. 2020 with the unique metaverse KWANGYA and recorded three-hit songs starting with “Black Mamba,” “Next Level,” and “Savage,” quickly becoming a top girl group.

“Next Level” became a hit with the choreography that made a shape of the Korean letter d with the arms and received praises for its popularity and musicality.

The group said, “We won the awards thanks to people who made covers for the song and followed the ‘d dance,’” adding, “We will continue to sing higher quality songs and work harder in 2022.”
