SEOUL, April 15 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage announced Monday that it will host a public lecture series titled “Doran Doran Palace Gathering” in Gyeongbokgung Palace.

The event is slated to run twice, on April 30 and September 24, at Heungbokjeon Hall.

The program invites citizens to explore various stories related to royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), with this year's theme focusing on the roofs of Joseon-era palaces.

The spring session will feature a lecture by Cho Sang-soon, director of the National Jungwon Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, under the title “Roofs of the Palace.” Participants will also tour the excavation site of Mungyeongjeon Hall and surrounding areas within Gyeongbokgung.

Mungyeongjeon was a spirit hall built during the reign of King Gojong (r. 1863–1907) as part of the late Joseon reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace. It housed spirit tablets of deceased kings and queens. Excavations that began in 2023 have uncovered various roof tiles used in the structure.

The fall session in September will be led by Lee Seon-myung, curator at the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage. He will discuss key architectural elements of palace rooftops, including structural features, roofing components, and traditional decorative painting known as dancheong.

Those interested in attending can register through the institute’s official website between 10 a.m. on April 16 and 5 p.m. on April 18.
