SEOUL, July 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korean film "Escape," starring Lee Je-hoon and Koo Kyo-hwan, has made a strong debut, attracting over 110,000 viewers on its opening day and securing the number one position at the box office.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated computer network for movie tickets on the 4th, "Escape" drew 112,000 viewers (with a revenue share of 33.2%) on its release day, climbing to the top of the rankings.
Directed by Lee Jong-pil, "Escape" tells the story of North Korean soldier Gyu-nam (played by Lee Je-hoon), who risks his life to defect, and Hyun-sang (played by Koo Kyo-hwan), a security officer chasing him. The film features a thrilling chase set against the backdrop of mountains and fields.
Disney-Pixar's animated film "Inside Out 2," which had been at the top since its release on June 12, gathered 105,000 viewers (32.2%) and was pushed to second place. Its cumulative audience has reached approximately 5.91 million, with the 6 million milestone in sight.
While "Inside Out 2" has been dethroned by "Escape," it still holds the potential to reclaim the top spot. As of this morning, "Inside Out 2" leads in ticket pre-sales with a rate of 37.3%, compared to "Escape's" 21.8%.
