SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Yonhap) -- S.Korea’s first KFC store Jongno will close business in 38 years.
According to the food industry on Sunday, the KFC Jongno branch in Gyeongin Building, Jongno 2-ga, Jongno-gu, Seoul, will close on Jan. 3 after its last business.
KFC Jongno, which opened in April 1984, will shut down in 38 years.
The KFC Jongno branch received great attention due to its symbolism as the first store in Korea and was selected as a so-called "hot place" in Gangbuk.
However, it is reported that the store decided to close the business due to the high maintenance costs.
In addition, the recent prolonged outbreak of COVID-19 seems to have affected the local commercial district, with other franchise stores closing businesses.
KFC Korea's sales fell 5.9% from a year ago to 197.4 billion won with the operating profit plunging 80.3% to 770 million won and net loss reaching 2.8 billion won.
