SEOUL, Mar. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean comedian-turned-director Park Sung-kwang’s screen debut film “Woong Nam” has touched down in second place at the domestic box office on the very first day of its release.

The brand-new comedy film scored second in the local box office chart, going after the Japanese animated blockbuster “Suzume” which gathered 69,000 admissions (50.0% of sales share). Park’s film accumulated 27,000 admissions (16.3% sales share) the day before its release.

Woong Nam, which recreates the prominent myth of Dangun, features the twin Asian black bears Woongnam and Woongbuk that turn into human beings after eating garlic and mugwort in a cave for 100 days. The twin, however, ends up living two very different lives – Woongnam joins an investigative team to cleanse all international criminal organizations as former police, while Woongbuk becomes the boss of an illicit organization that his brother chases after.

In the film, actor Park Sung-woong suits up as Woongnam, along with Lee Yi-kyung, Choi Min-soo, Oh Dal-soo, and Yeom Hye-ran.

In the meantime, actress Jeon Jong-seo’s Hollywood debut film “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon,” which hit the box office on the same day as “Woong Nam” touched down in fifth place, followed by the semi-autobiographical story of director Steven Spielberg “The Fabelmans” sitting in sixth.
