SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) -- "The focal point of portraying Su-cheol was 'not overacting,"said actor Kwak Dong-yeon regarding his recent role as Hong Su-cheol, the younger brother of the female lead Hong Hae-in (played by Kim Ji-won) in the recently concluded mega-hit series "Queen of Tears."

"I deliberated on suppressing certain aspects of the character's early traits, I thought more about giving my best in the given role and challenging how much I could appeal to people with the character's changing dynamics,"

Created through the actor's contemplation, Hong Su-cheol emerged as one of the characters contributing to the success of the tvN's rom-com series. The show achieved the highest viewership rating of 24.85% among all tvN dramas, concluding on April 28.

During an interview conducted at a cafe in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on April 30 to commemorate the end of the drama, Kwak Dong-yeon couldn't hide his joy, expressing gratitude to the viewers who showed tremendous love.

In a pivotal scene, Su-cheol breaks down in tears after searching for his wife and son who disappear after his wife, Cheon Da-hye, leaves with their newborn child.

Referring to this scene, Kwak Dong-yeon said, "I prepared a lot because I considered it a very important scene. We shot it over five times, and I put a lot of effort into connecting the emotions."

Following this, Da-hye reveals through a letter that both her age and status were lies, and their son Geon-woo is not Su-cheol's biological child. However, Su-cheol continues to claim Geon-woo as his own and showers Da-hye with unchanged love.

Interpreting Su-cheol's unwavering love, Kwak Dong-yeon remarked, "In fact, Su-cheol has a very simple side, and it's because of that simplicity that such actions were possible."

He further explained, "Su-cheol is someone who believes what he wants to see and trusts what he wants to believe. He genuinely thinks of the child who calls him 'dad' as his own, and due to the sincerity Da-hye unintentionally showed him during their marriage, Su-cheol also harbored the intention to protect his partner."

Born in 1997 and unmarried in personal life, Kwak Dong-yeon's character Su-cheol in the drama is portrayed as being born in 1991 and a father. Especially emphasizing paternal love, Su-cheol even sends a message to his runaway wife, urging her to ensure their child receives vaccinations.

Regarding this, Kwak Dong-yeon said, "Those who have actually given birth and raised children would know the weight of emotions, so I worried that even if I imitated emotions through acting, there would still be differences. Instead of thinking about how I would feel if I had a child, I approached it from the perspective of how our parents would have felt about me, and then I understood."

Throughout the interview, Kwak Dong-yeon injected humor, eliciting laughter from those present. Especially, when Park Sung-hoon, who appeared in "Queen of Tears" together, commented, "I thought Kwak Dong-yeon was born in 1987," Kwak responded humorously, "I demand an official apology. This cannot be ignored," revealing his cheerful personality.

Despite enjoying humor, when the conversation turned to acting, Kwak Dong-yeon promptly returned to a serious demeanor. Particularly, when asked about future plans, he replied tirelessly, "I have so many things I want to do."

Thinking about the power of family stories in "Queen of Tears," Kwak Dong-yeon expressed his desire to work on projects dealing with family stories. He also expressed interest in action genres that require physical acting and static characters that express emotions as minimally as possible, unlike Su-cheol.

When asked how he would remember "Queen of Tears," Kwak Dong-yeon responded, "It's a work that expanded me."

He added, "It's been a long time since I worked on a project breathing with so many senior actors. Feeling their experience and wisdom, I was able to recharge a lot of nutrients to be used in my future acting endeavors."
