[가슴을 떨리게 한 전남 장성]

전남 장성은 내게 정말 익숙한 지명이지만 사실상 처음 방문이었다.

조선왕조가 전주에서 발아되었고 나는 그 후손이며, 내 부모님은 전라도가 고향이다. 나는 전라도와 깊은 인연이다.

하지만 장성까지의 여정은 쉽지 않았다. 근무일정은 꼬였고, 기차표는 매진됐으며, 여행 떠나기 며칠 전 발목을 삐었다. 이 모든 난관을 겨우 하나하나 수습했다.

이번 여행은 엄마로서 아내로서 직장인으로서 아주 열심히 살아온 나 자신에 대한 휴식이며 보상이었다. 장성 나들이는 오롯이 나만을 위한 시간이었다.

첫 일정에 앞서 먼저 도착한 식당 인근에서 홀로 걸은 30분 정도의 산책은 나를 넘어 자연과 함께 하는 사유 같은 것이기도 했다. 얼마만에 맡는 자연의 향기며 자연과 친구가 되는 일이었던가!
미소를 띄며 바라본 도로에는 우리 일행들이 탄 버스가 도착하고 있었다.

반갑게 인사를 나누고 식사 후 백양사로 향했다. 입구부터 몇 백 년 된 나무들이 빼곡했다. 호수에 드리워진 아기단풍 잎들은 이루 말할 수 없이 아름다웠다. 백양사 입구 산책로는 제주도의 비자림에 온 것 같은 착각을 일으켰다.

산사에서는 음악회가 열리고 있었다. 트로트를 그리 좋아하지 않지만, 가수들은 외모도 출중했고 가창력도 뛰어났다. 주지스님이 예술분야에 관심이 많고 개방적인 분이어서 이런 문화 행사를 자주 개최한다고 했다.

백양사 내 극락보전과 대웅전을 둘러보고 백학봉의 센 기운도 느껴보았다. 부처가 보리수나무 아래에서 깨달음을 얻었다고 해 보리수나무 열매로 염주를 만든다는 사실은 처음 알게 됐다.

 

350년 된 고불매나무는 인생 샷이 나오는 곳이라 꽃이 피면 줄을 서서 대기하는 인기 있는 장소라고 했다.

이어진 일정은 ‘문화예술공원’. 그런데 OMG(오 마이 갓 ㅜㅜㅜ)

핸드폰이 사라진 사실을 알게 됐다. 정신이 아찔해졌다. 공원에 도착하자마자 사태를 수습하기 위해 급히 장성에 거주 중인 문화 해설사 선생에게 도움을 요청했다.

정신을 놓아버린 듯한 기운으로 일행과 따로 백양사에 오고 가는 등 내 자취를 근거로 샅샅이 뒤졌지만 결국 찾지 못해 실망감에 젖어 있던 중 버스 바닥에서 운전기사분이 핸드폰을 주워 보관하고 있다는 전화를 받았다. 여정에 대한 액땜으로 여겼다.

그 분실 사건 사이에서 여러 사람들이 내게 베푼 친절은 꽤 인상적이었다. 장성은 산수만 수려한 곳이 아니라 인심도 좋은 곳이었다.

저녁에 소고기로 영양 보충을 하고 숙소로 돌아와 짐을 푼 뒤 수제맥주파티를 즐겼다. 목이 쉴 정도로 많이 웃었다. 4인 숙소에 배치된 나는 사람들과 금세 친해졌다.

다음날 아침은 장성의 향기가 물씬 나는 ‘노랑나랑 숲’.

아침식사를 배불리 먹은 후 편백나무가 유명한 숲으로 이동했다. 천연비누도 만들어보고 장성에서 생산되는 곡물과 과일로 만든 시리얼과 강정도 시식해 보았다.

한 시간 정도 숲을 거닌 후 필암서원으로 이동했다. 이곳은 김인후 선생님을 배향하는 곳으로 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재된 9개의 서원중 하나다.

‘Yellow City’란 컬러마케팅을 하는 장성의 기치답게 주변에 산수유나무를 많이 심었다고 한다. 서원주변이 산수유나무로 노랗게 물들기 시작하면 강을 따라 산책을 해도 좋고 서원에서 가까운 ‘홍길동 테마파크’를 함께 둘러보는 코스로 여행을 하면 아주 만족스러운 여행이 될 것 같다는 생각을 했다.

장성호 수변도로나 황룡강 생태공원도 더없이 좋으리라!

사람도 성형수술을 너무 많이 하면 보는 이로 하여금 거부감이 들게 한다. 마찬가지로 지역도 개발이 과도하게 된 곳은 인공적인 냄새가 나지만 여기 장성은 자연미가 많이 남아 있는 곳이라 인상적이었고 다시 방문하고 싶은 곳이었다.

여행은 다리가 떨릴 때가 아니라 가슴이 떨릴 때 하라고 했다. 장성은 가슴이 떨리는 관광지 중 하나였다.

 

 

My heart flutters for Jangseong, South Jeolla Province

It was my first-ever visit to Jangseong, South Jeolla Province, but the region has been so close to my heart.

The Joseon Dynasty originated from Jeonju, and I am its descendant. My parents' hometown is in Jeolla Province. I have a deep connection with Jeolla Province.

However, the journey to Jangseong was not easy. My work schedule got messed up, train tickets were sold out, and a few days before the trip, I sprained my ankle. I managed to overcome all these obstacles one by one.

This trip is a rest and reward for myself, as a mother, a wife, and a working professional. Jangseong outing is exclusively for me.
 

Before the first scheduled event, I took a solo walk for about 30 minutes near the restaurant where I arrived earlier. It was a moment that went beyond myself, as if I was in communion with nature. How long had it been since I embraced the scent of nature and became friends with it!

 

With a smile on my face, I looked at the road where our group's bus was arriving. 

 

We greeted each other warmly, had a meal, and then headed to Baekyang Temple. From the entrance, there were hundreds of years old trees lined up. The baby maple leaves hanging over the lake were indescribably beautiful. The walking path at the entrance of Baekyang Temple gave me the illusion of being in the visa forest of Jeju Island.

There was a concert being held in the temple. Although I'm not particularly fond of trot music, the singers had exceptional looks and singing abilities. The head monk told me that he is interested in the arts and is an open-minded person, so such cultural events are frequently held.

I visited the Geungnakbojeon and Daewoongjeon inside Baekyang Temple and also felt the powerful energy of Baekakbong.

I learned for the first time that the Buddha obtained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree and made Buddhist rosary using Bodhi fruit. The 350-year-old Gobulmaenamu tree was said to be a popular spot where people wait in line to take a once-in-a-lifetime photo when it blooms.

The next scheduled stop was the "Culture and Art Park." But OMG (tears), I realized my phone was missing. I felt dizzy. As soon as we arrived at the park, I urgently asked for help from a guide who lives in Jangseong to resolve the situation.

In a state of disarray, they thoroughly searched my every move, including going back and forth to Baekyang Temple separately from the group, but eventually couldn't find it.

While feeling disappointed, I received a call saying that the bus driver had found my phone and kept it. I considered it a stroke of luck for my journey. Amidst the incident of losing my phone, the kindness shown by various people left a deep impression on me.

Jangseong is not only a place with beautiful mountains and rivers but also a place with warm-hearted people.

In the evening, we replenished our energy with beef and returned to our accommodation to unpack before enjoying a homemade beer party. I laughed so much that my throat hurt.

Being assigned to a four-person room, I quickly became friends with the people.

The next morning, we visited the "Norangnarang Forest," which had the scent of Jangseong. After having a hearty breakfast, we moved to the forest famous for Korean nut pines. We also tried making natural soap and tasted cereal and candy made from grains and fruits produced in Jangseong.

After about an hour of walking in the forest, we went to Pilarmsaewon. It is one of the nine academies where people pay tribute to Master Kim In-hu and has been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Jangseong, known for its color marketing as the 'Yellow City,' has planted many Chinese tallow trees around it, consistent with its reputation. When the area around the academy starts turning yellow with Chinese tallow trees, it would be delightful to take a stroll along the river and visit the nearby 'Hong Gildong Theme Park' as part of the itinerary. Jangseong Lake's waterfront road and Hwangryong River Ecological Park would undoubtedly be wonderful as well!

Just as excessive plastic surgery can create a sense of aversion in onlookers, an excessively developed area can give off an artificial scent. However, Jangseong has retained much of its natural beauty, making it impressive and a place I would like to visit again.

It is said that travel should be done when your heart trembles, not just when your legs tremble. Jangseong is definitely one of those heart-fluttering tourist destinations.
