SEOUL, March 27 (Yonhap) -- Seoul's Jongno District Office said Wednesday it has completed a 4.3-kilometer roadside garden project connecting Samcheong-ro, Hyoja-ro and Cheong Wa Dae-ro around Gyeongbok Palace and Cheong Wa Dae.
The project was designed to create a pedestrian-friendly green corridor where tourists and residents visiting the historic area can enjoy seasonal scenery alongside cultural heritage sites. A total of 346 million won (US$255,000) was invested over the past three years.
Along Cheong Wa Dae-ro, where maintenance work was completed this month, the district created traditional garden-style green spaces near Sinmumun Gate and installed granite flower pots and seasonal flowers.
More than 700 hydrangea plants, including mountain hydrangeas and panicle hydrangeas, were planted along the median strips to create summer floral scenery. Pampas grass and fountain grass will be added in autumn, while dogwood trees and evergreen sedges will decorate the area in winter.
Samcheong-ro, where a roadside garden was completed in 2024, was landscaped with natural stones and flowering plants to evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Korean garden.
On Hyoja-ro, spring flowering trees and shrubs, including azaleas, flowering cherries and Corylopsis, were added to existing gingko tree green spaces to create a flower-lined road harmonizing with the walls of Gyeongbok Palace.
A district official said the completion of the green corridor will help transform the Gyeongbok Palace-Cheong Wa Dae area into a pedestrian attraction where visitors can enjoy both history and nature.
"We will continue efforts to create Jongno into a garden city with pleasant walking spaces," the official said.
