SEOUL, July 17 (Yonhap) -- What if a man could live as a woman for a few days, and vice versa? It may seem like a frivolous thought, but experiencing life as the opposite sex could potentially lead to a better understanding between men and women, alleviating gender conflicts.

Director Kim Han-gyeol's new film 'Pilot' is a comedy that explores this concept. The film follows the story of Jeong-woo, played by Jo Jung-suk, a self-centered man who, in an attempt to escape his life's dead end, transforms into a woman to start anew.

Jeong-woo is an accomplished pilot with a prestigious background, having graduated at the top of his class from the Air Force Academy. His excellent flying skills and handsome appearance make him a popular figure on social media. However, his seemingly perfect life takes a nosedive when he makes an inappropriate remark to a female flight attendant during a company party, leading to his dismissal and subsequent public disgrace.

Unable to find reemployment due to being blacklisted in the industry, Jeong-woo discovers that Han Air, a low-cost airline, is hiring female pilots. With the help of his sister Jeong-mi, a beauty YouTuber played by Han Sun-hwa, he successfully disguises himself as a woman and starts a new life.

At Han Air, Jeong-woo, now Jeong-mi, is thrown into amusing predicaments. He struggles with the advances of Hyun-seok (Shin Seung-ho), a former junior from the Air Force Academy, and engages in deep conversations with his fellow female pilot, Seul-gi (Lee Joo-myung).

The comedy stems from Jeong-woo's occasional slips, revealing his male identity despite his convincing female appearance. 'Pilot' presents a series of implausible events, including Jeong-woo’s overnight transformation and successful employment, without much concern for realism. While this could be off-putting for some viewers, it fits the summer 'popcorn movie' vibe, intended for light-hearted entertainment.

The film also touches on the issue of gender discrimination still present in Korean society, portraying Jeong-woo's challenges in his new role. However, it maintains a light and upbeat tone, avoiding a heavy-handed approach.

Through his experiences as a woman, Jeong-woo gains a deeper understanding of his female colleagues and reflects on his own life, ultimately reconnecting with his family. This heartwarming element adds a family-friendly touch to the movie.

Jo Jung-suk, known for his distinctive comedic roles in films like 'Architecture 101' (2012) and 'Exit' (2019), once again showcases his exceptional ability to deliver laughs. Han Sun-hwa, Lee Joo-myung, and Shin Seung-ho complement him well, each bringing their unique characters to life.

'Pilot' marks Director Kim's return with a new project five years after his debut romantic comedy 'Crazy Romance' (2019). He describes 'Pilot' as a story about a self-centered person who, through a special experience, begins to reflect on himself and his family.

The film is set to be released on the 31st. It runs for 110 minutes and is rated for ages 12 and up.
