SEOUL, Nov. 5 (Yonhap) -- The new superhero film "Eternals," which marks the new beginning of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been released in South Korea.

"Eternals" attracted 296,000 viewers on Nov. 3, the first day of its release, and accounted for 88.9 percent of ticket sales, scoring the highest opening performance among Marvel movies released this year. On the second day, the film garnered 177,000 viewers and took up 81 percent of ticket sales.

The film depicts the story of a race of immortal beings called "The Eternals," who have not appeared for thousands of years, coming together to fight against humanity's oldest enemy "Deviants."
 

"Eternals" director Chloe Zhao, who won Oscars for "Nomadland" (2021), strays away from the way heroes were portrayed in previous Marvel films. For instance, the genders, sexualities, and ethnicities of several characters have been swapped and the ten Eternal heroes are played by a diverse group of actors, including Korean actor Ma Dong-seok.

The director takes a different approach in depicting how the heroes create the strongest power when joining forces despite being from different races and nationalities.

This, however, raises the question of whether loyal Marvel fans will be accepting of such changes or perceive them to be foreign or perhaps attract new Marvel fans.

Director Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi masterpiece, "Dune," was ranked second place while "Venom: Let There Be Carnage," which surpassed two million viewers, and newly released films such as "Seberg" as well as "The United States Vs. Billie Holiday" only attracted thousands of viewers.

The reservation rate for "Eternals" as of Friday morning was 82.5 percent, followed by "Dune" with 7.5 percent.
