SEOUL April 26 (Yonhap) -- The latest installment in the "The Roundup" series, starring Ma Dong-seok, has stormed the box office in its opening weekend, drawing over 1.3 million viewers, according to data from the Integrated Computerized Ticketing Network for Movie Theaters.

"The Roundup : Punishment" claimed the top spot at the box office on its second day of release, with over 473,000 viewers accounting for 95.0% of the total box office revenue.

On the same day, the cumulative number of viewers surpassed the 1 million mark, reaching 1,335,000.

All eyes in the theater industry are now focused on how many viewers "The Roundup : Punishment" will attract over the course of its first weekend, spanning three days from the 26th to the 28th.

Typically, the number of viewers peaks during the first weekend before gradually declining in the following weeks, making the opening weekend audience count a key indicator of success.

Last year's blockbuster "The Roundup : No Way Out" drew in 2,817,000 viewers during its opening weekend.

As of Saturday morning, "The Roundup : Punishment" boasts a reservation rate of 93.8%, hinting at a dominating performance at the box office this weekend. The number of reservations has reached 851,000.

A check of ticket sales at three major multiplexes reveals that some screenings on Saturday and Sunday afternoons are already filling up, with few seats remaining available.

While "The Roundup : Punishment" enjoys box office success, other films released around the same time are struggling to shine.

"Challengers," a romance film released on the same day as "The Roundup : Punishment," starring Hollywood star Zendaya and receiving positive reviews from critics and the press, only managed to attract around 3,000 viewers (0.6%) on its second day of release.
