Number of K-pop artists send New Years greetings through American TV shows

SEOUL December 31 (Yonhap) -- Due to the raised awareness of K-pop, various K-pop artists are delivering their new years greeting by participating in American TV shows.

According to the K-pop industry on December 31, Superstar J-hope of K-pop superstar BTS will be participating in America’s well known TV program by ABC, “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” on Saturday (US time).

K-pop boy group Tomorrow x Together will also perform a stage on “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” alongside J-Hope.

Boy Group NCT 127 will participate on CNN International’s special segment “New Year’s Eve Live” remotely from South Korea on Saturday and participate in an interview with the host Kristie Lu Stout.

This will be the first time K-pop artists will be featured on major American Tv shows after Psy took the stage on “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” after his global mega hit “Gangnam Style” in 2012.

Back in the days, Psy showcased various stages with members Yoo Jae-suk, Haha, No Hong-chul and more from South Korean variety show Infinity challenge provided by MBC, and MC Hammer at Time Square. Artist danced along with over a million of the audiences gathered up at the scene which provided an opportunity for people to learn about K-pop.

Later on as South Korean boy group BTS became a global sensation, group was featured on the show “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” through pre recorded video in 2017, and on 2019, they showcased a live stage following the footsteps of Psy. Continuing on, BTS also sent out their new years greeting through Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on 2020.

“Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” which is a live TV show often times watched by at most of 25 million people, feature globally well known artists so that everyone who watches the show can enjoy their New Years eve.

According to the official of the South Korean music industry, “The fact that K-pop artists are now featured on various shows in United States show that K-pop has become a segment of a pop culture in united states.”

South Korean music critic, Jung Min-jae addressed “I serves as a scene to test out the power of the fandom of an artist or a group,” adding “Those who contact the artists, intentionally look at the size of the fandom for better attraction.”

Due to the increased interest of K-pop in foreign nation, love calls made to South Korean artists will continue on for a while.

Critic Jung Min-jae stated, “In north America, K-pop artists are participating in grand festivals on top of TV shows,” adding “K-pop superstars will continue on to participate in various segments in United States.”

Pop culture critic Kim Hun-sik addressed “Since United States media need, various contents to attract the younger generation therefore K-pop will take up a segment to attract those younger demographic of audience.”
