South Korea is well known for its unique dessert cultures, from cute and appealing sweets to countless types of breads to suit everyone’s appetite. Throughout the article I would like to introduce one of South Korea’s most well known bakeries Sung Sim Dang located in Daejeon.
Sung Sim Dang which kicked off its business next to a cathedral in Daejeon on 1956 has successfully grown into one of the top 5 South Korean bakeries, providing the customers with their famous 튀김 소보로 (fried soboro bread in English).
Sung Sim Dang bakery provides open kitchen production line of their famous fried soboro so that visitors can see how their bread are made. As seen through the photos provided above, the belt carries fried soboro throughout the process of its making.
Sung Sim Dang is not only known for its famous fried soboros, the bakery provides over 60 flavorful breads to meet visitors need and appetite. Since the bakery is almost always packed with people from all over South Korea in order to buy the fried soboro, Sung Sim Dang provides separate counter where clerks specifically sell the gift wrapped fried soboros.
As seen in the picture above, Sung Sim Dang provides visitors with 9 various soboro packages from the basic combinations to family size combinations. Price of these combinations vary from 10,000 won to 22,000 won.
Within the gift wrapped soboro boxes consumers are greeted with instructions for consumers to re-heat the bread in specific ways to recreate the eating experience.

On top of the various gift wrapped soboros Sung Sim Dang offers numerous gift options packed in unique traditional wrappers.
Since Sung Sim Dang is always packed with visitors, they have created a little historical segments where those who wait in line can briefly learn about the histories and how once a small bakery became the landmark of Daejeon City. Behind the glass window visitors can see the replicated tools used to bake goods in the past.
In my humble opinion, I really enjoyed my visit to Sung Sim Dang, from seeing the production line of their well known fried soboro, to picking out various breads which caught my attention, and learning about the history of the bakery. Therefore I would recommend anyone who visits Daejeon to drop by at Sung Sim Dang and try out their most famous fried soboro at least once.
